At the June meeting Bill Jones was with us for the day and he turned two pieces using only scrapers and parting off tools, some of his tools had been made by his father some fifty odd years ago. His first item was a screw top box with a decorative button fitted to the lid. The button was the first thing to be made in two pieces from casein, a plastic type of material made from milk and comes in a variety of colours, some are multi coloured and popular with pen makers. Once turned and a thread cut on the spindle that will fit into the lid later, he carved the pattern using small circular saws held in the lathe chuck. He then set his block of sycamore in the chuck and turned the lid, parted if off then turned the box. It was all polished against a mop fitted to the chuck, the centre button on the lid looking rather like a ruby. In the afternoon Bill made a chess piece that comprised four sections, the base ,the stem, the top and the finial, all screwed together. Bill Bassant asked what size thread he was using and Bill said 18tpi. Any reason why 18tpi. BB asked” to which Bill replied “Because I can’t find my 20tpi chaser” Get out of that!! At mid morning we asked Bill to judge the competition entries, and he took a long time deciding before finally picking a segmented vase made by Mike Fisher as the turning of the month and a cherry vase by Pat Hughes as the runner up. We only had eight entries compared with about twenty at the May meeting. I hope I didn’t put you all off with my comment about one entry per person. Fred Taylor has said that ALL pictures will go on the website so the more the merrier on that front and I will choose the best for the newsletter. Our next meeting will be held on July 8th and Reg Slack is our demonstrator for the day, another well known name in the world of woodturning. I hope we have a big turnout and a lot of master pieces adorning the display table for Reg to drool over!! Our show over the May Bank Holiday at the Wyvale Garden Centre took off at the last minute and I want to say a big Thank you to those who made it a success. We presented Demelza House with a cheque for £856.20 raised from the sale of items made by club members and from the tombola, with prizes donated by members. Well done to everyone. We are still holding our hands on nights every second Thursday evening of the month. In either September or October we will be arranging a talk by Mark of Mark Plants Ltd. (You may remember him from our May meeting when he turned up with a lorry load of logs for sale.) He has offered to give a talk on the handling of chain saws. I will let you know when we have a firm date. That’s all from me for this month. He passed away in hospital on Saturday 10th June with his family by his side. I am sure that Bill will always be remembered by us all as a perfect gentleman with a big smile and a warm handshake for everyone. Our sympathy goes to all the family. |
